Communication is so important; it is the foundation of all human interactions. The problem is that so many beginner coaches think it is necessary to verbalize every action on the court. Communicating like this can be a waste of breath. How you communicate as a team is far more important than what you communicate. Language is complex: everyone derives meaning differently, and more often than not, messages get misunderstood or misinterpreted. So, personally, when I communicate, I like to think I’m communicating with a newborn, because realistically, they have no idea what I’m saying, but they recognize how it’s being said to them with impeccable precision.
