When I changed clubs, my focus shifted towards the beach. The biggest challenge I faced was teaching athletes what they can and can’t control. Unless you go to Moonlight State Beach for old school, big court (9m x 9m) volleyball, or to the Outrigger Canoe Club (in Hawaii) for a miniature court, the dimensions of the court are not something we can control; it’s just part of the environment. Even though we can adjust things like net height, changing the environment in a similar fashion isn’t allowed while competing. Wind is another aspect of the environment that we can’t control. Honestly, I think complaining about strong wind is equally absurd to complaining about the net height, or better yet, the court size. But, if you spend your time complaining about the sand or the fact that you can’t kick the ball every time, your coach should tell you not to waste your time with the wrong sport, because it seems like you might already have a sport you love.
