For years, I had used habits to chase a destination.

I had become disciplined.

Dependable.

Observant.

The habits that had carried me upward began maintaining rather than advancing me.

Soon side-out scoring gave way to rally scoring. Courts became smaller. Digital brackets replaced paper sheets. Young athletes arrived with strength programs, recruiting profiles, edited video, and access to information we once gathered through parking-lot conversations.

The culture changed.

Years later I became a college coach.

Some recognized the exercise.

Most expected goals.

Olympics.

Scholarship.

Starting pair.

A Championship.

Who are you becoming?

The first answers sounded impressive.

Elite.

Fearless.

Dominant.

I crossed them out.

We rebuilt the language.

A teammate who communicates honestly.

A competitor who prepares before pressure.

A learner who reviews mistakes without becoming one.

The cover has nearly separated from the binding. Pages smell faintly of sand and old coffee. The earliest check marks look overly careful. Later pages are crowded with tournament notes, partnership rules, rehabilitation plans, coaching observations, and identities revised as life changed.

The first sentence remains.

I am a disciplined athlete.

On the final page, I wrote something different.

Identity is not a trophy awarded after enough good behavior. It is a direction renewed by the next choice.
